Dear Parents,                                                                                               October Newsletter

Thank you for your support of the things  we are doing in class.  It has been a great couple of months so far.  We are working very hard on basics skills and pushing the boundaries of creativity and skill.  I am truly excited about what the students have done and will do this year.

In language we are working through a word workbook which focuses on words and sentences.  With each assignment, students are encouraged to be creative and challenge themselves.  The next step is to start writing more with paragraphs, stories and poems.  We also include social topics in our writing and technology classes.  The students are learning to creative web pages, videos and programs using basic Microsoft programs (found on most computers).

In math the students are learning math using a variety of strategies.  They retell simple stories with very specific math connections to remember the basic facts.  They use these facts to do more advanced math concepts like algebra and geometry.  Each assignment is leveled to allow the students to work at their own level whether that means working on basic problems or challenging themselves with more complex questions.

We are also doing some projects and activities that allow students to learn with less traditonal methods.  We bake in class, which lets students explore measurements, estimation, the Metric and Imperial systems and ratios.  We are performing “Alice” as part of our language study.  We are also playing math games out on the sidewalk to reinforce the math facts.

If you have time to volunteer in the class, we would love to have you come in.  Officer Barry has already come into to do a mini CSI activity with the students, Mrs. Kostiw is helping with the music for “Alice” and Mrs. DeKock has helped us with our math games outside.

If you have any questions, please give me a call at the school (780.349.3385).
