4T LANGUAGE ARTS

The following link is specific to Grade 4 Language Arts. Here you will find many writing (grammar, punctuation, vowels, prefixes, suffixes, antonyms, synonyms etc) and reading (mains ideas, cause/effect, sequencing, reading comprehension, vocabulary etc) activities! We will be starting individual Autobiographies in March. This will be done on a power point and will require picutres of each student growing up. More information on this will come home.

Reading:Students are expected to be reading at least 20 minutes each night. 

We have started our Literacy Place Book Unit (guided reading): Worlds of Wonder. Students are in reading groups of their level and do various reading comprehension activities and read in various ways (buddy reading, individual reading and reading with me).

We have now finished our patterns unit and our unit with whole numbers to 10 000. This unit also involved addition and subtraction of 3 and 4 digit numbers

Current Focus:

Unit 3: Multiplication and Division

  • use different strategies to multiply and divide
  • multiply by 0, 1, and 10
  • divide by 1
  • recall multiplication and division facts
  • identify and describe patterns in a multiplication chart
  • relate multiplication and division
  • make and solve story problems using multiplication and division
  • write and solve equations

6M /6J SOCIAL STUDIES

Current Focus: Democracy in the Iroquois Confederacy (Chapter 3 of the Voices of Democracy Text book)

Now that we have spent January and most of February studying democracy in ancient Athens, we will now look at democracy in the Iroquois Confederacy. Here are what students will learn:

  • How the Iroquois Confederacy was structured
  • What the role and status of women was
  • The advantages and disadvantages of consensus as a decision-making model for government
  • How the Six Nations used the consensus building process
  • How the Wampum Belt addresses collective identity
  • How the social structure of the Iroquois Confederacy impacted the political structure
  • The extent to which the decision-making process reflected the ideals of equity and fairness
